Wool Craft

Pom Pom & Tassel Garland

So in the lase week I have injured my leg and mobility has been an issue. So as I lay back on the couch I decided that I would try some crafting that I have been meaning to do for a while. I decided to make some Pom Poms and Tassels.

What you will need

  • Pom Pom making kit (I used one from Søstrene Grene)
  • Cardboard
  • Wool in different colours.
  • Twine
  • Scissors

Method

Pom Pom’s

I had lots of scraps of wool let over after other projects so I decided to make some small pom poms and make a garland out of them.

The kit I got in Søstrene Grene had a great picture step by step but I will also talk you through it here.

Take 2 parts that are the same colour/size and lined them up together. They don’t slot into each other but there are little holes the the bumps on the opposite rest against. Pic 1

Now take the wool and start wrapping it around the half circle. I went over and back covering it about 3 to 4 times. I wanted a poofy pom. Pic 2-4

Without cutting the wool I moved over to the other half circle and did the same thing. Once you have both sides done, join the together and clip them into place. You can trim off the ball of wool. Pic 8-9

Using a sharp tip scissors cut the wool like in Picture along both sides of the circle. Pic 10

Now you have the strands of the pom. Taking a piece of wool pull it in between the 2 circles of plastic to the center of the pom strands. Pic 11-12

Tie the center tight, I use 3 knots to be safe. Pic 13

You can now remove the plastic circle. Unclip each side and open it up. Your Pom Pom is now Free. Pic 14

I left the 2 strings that I used for the centre left long as I will be using them to tie it to the garland.

Last of all I trimmed the pom to make it as round as possible. Pic 15-16

Tassels

I wanted to add a few tassels to the garland also. I used a peace of scrap cardboard. roughly the length I wanted the tassel to be.

I placed a strand of wool at the top of the head and wound it around the card. The more you have on it the thicker the tassel is. Step 1-2

Once I was happy with the amount of wool I tied the top nice and tight with 3 knots. Step 3

I cut the opposite end of the wool with scissors freeing the tassel from the card. Step 4

Straighten out the strands if you can. this is easier with some wool compared to others. Step 5

Now take another strand of wool and tie it about 2cm from the ties top. this will make what looks like a head. Step 6

Then I trimmed the bottom of the tassel to make them as close to all the same length as possible. Step 7

I kept the string I tightened the top with so I could tie it to the garland. Step 8

I cut some twine about a meter long. taking the poms and tassels I devised them along the length. I them hung it on my mantle piece. What do you think?
