For years I worked in a joke shop back home. I would love to decorate the window and Halloween was my favourite. So when it came to Halloween at home I often took it to the next level
When I first lived in Dublin I only had my bedroom window to decorate. I lived on the ground floor so I took full advantage.
I took my inspiration from the famous floating candles in Harry Potter. After collecting toilet roll and kitchen roll inserts for weeks I side my glue gun to created a fake drip wax affect on them. Once they where all dried I painted them white. I took some transparent tread I use for jewellery I made a cross about 2cm from the top that a battery tealight could rest on. I then hung them at different lengths at the window. I then went a bit crazy with the webs. So much fun.
Here is how the first Floating Candle display turned out.
Believe it or not, I had never carved a pumpkin until this year. I always got wrapped up in making a costume and never had the time. But this year I said I would give it a go and I am so glad I did.
That you will need
Pumpkin Any Size (I used a Small one I got in Aldi for 99c)
Kitchen Knife.
Sharp Craft Knife.
Black White board Marker & Pencil
Stencil Image
Spoon and bowl
Vaseline
Method
After reading a few different how to’s on Pinterest I decided to open up the pumpkin from the bottom. I started by making a circle with a knife and the cut in into segments like a cake. When I open it up I was so surprised how thick the flesh was on a small pumpkin.
I used a small paring knife to cut the inside flesh and make it easier for my hand to get in. Then taking a regular spoon I began to scrap out the gooey insides and seeds. This took a bit of effort to scrape out the gooey, stringy insides. I put it all in a bowl as I went along.
I then drew on the design I wanted to use. I did a free handed design rather than using a stencil but you can use a stencil if you find it easier. I used a pencil first but found it faint so I used a white board marker so I could wipe off the excess after.
Once I was happy with the design, I started to carve out the
parts I wanted the light to come through.
The thick skin was an issue here as well as the whole I cut
out didn’t seem very big. So I trimmed it back again using the sharp craft knife
to get in at the little bits.
Once it was all done, I used Vaseline to seal all the inside
and open edges of the pumpkin. This should stop it from decaying so fast.
Hopefully ?
Now it ready for the lights. Let me know what you think?
If you remember a few weeks ago I did a cute garland with pom poms and tassels. Well this is where I got the inspiration for this not so spooky Halloween Garland.
What you will Need
Wool (Orange, Black and White)
Pom Pom Makers
Cardboard
Scissors
Pipe cleaners
Googly eyes
Twine
Method
First of all I took the orange wool with the intention of making a Pumpkin pom To make the Pom Poms, go to this link to find out how to make a perfect Pom Pom.
Once I had the Pom made I wanted to add a bit of a green steam. I took a small piece of pipe cleaner and using the 2 loose strands of the pom I tied it into place. Then I twisted the pipe cleaner around itself
Then I added to sticky googly eyes to the pom and he is ready to hang
Next I took the black wool and this time I wanted to make a pom Spider. Again to make the Pom Poms, go to this link to find out how to make a perfect Pom Pom.
I took a purple pipe cleaner and split it in 4 for the spider legs. Taking the 2 loose threads from the pom and tie the legs to the pom, using a double knot. Then I turned the pom over the tie the two loose ends at the top of the pom for tying to the garland.
To finish the spider off i bent down the legs and added some googly eyes.
The last part of the garland is a Ghost. To make the Tassel, go to this link to find out how to make a perfect Tassel
Once you have the Tassel, all you have to do is add the Googly eyes. Simple!
Now its time to hang them. I cut some twine about a meter long. taking the poms and tassels I devised them along the length. I them hung it on my mantle piece. Spooky Cute isn’t it
Step 1 – Start by cutting off the sleeve off an old long sleeve shirt. Cut off the cuff so you have a tube like piece of material. I didn’t have any shirts so I sewed some material into a tube shape.
Step 2 – I cut six lengths of the jute twine making sure they are longer then the tube of material.
Step 3 – I tied the twine all together in a big knot. Turning the sleeve inside out I bring the twine to the part that will be the bottom of the pumpkin.
Step 4 – I then bunched the material together around the twine. I put an elastic around it several times. nice and tight.
Step 5 – I pop the material back right side out with the twine coming from the bottom.
Step 6- Then I stuffed the sleeve with cushion filler. I put plenty in to make it nice and poofy
Step 7 – Once its nice and stuffed, I bunched up the top and take the strands of twine and bring them up the sides. then using an elastic I tighten the top.
Step 8- Now pull on the strands of twine you will see them start to make the pumpkin shape you are looking for.
Step 9 – To make the stem part 1 wrap some of the twine around the top, using a glue gun to stop it unravelling.
Lastly to add a but of decoration, untangle the jute twine. I also glued some small parts of leaves I had. I think these look super cute.
