Valentines Garland

I wanted to do something small for valentines this year so I thought you can’t go wrong with a garland.

What you will need

  • Cardboard
  • Wool – Red, pink and White
  • Darning Needle
  • Pom Pom Maker
  • Twine
  • Scissors

Method

I made 2 different types of hearts and some pom poms for the garland.

Stitched Heart

Firstly, I took the thin cardboard and drew a heart. Once I was happy with the shape, I cut it out with scissors. I used this first heart as a template for more.

I then took a punch, the one I use happened to have a heart shape punch. I followed the edge of the heart leaving about a half cm in between each hole.

Once I had the heart ready I took some wool and thread it in a darning needle. Now it is time to stitch up the heart.

I stitched away crossing it over and back randomly. When I was happy there was enough stitching, I tied a knot.

Wrapped Heart

For the second style heart I took one of the pre cut card hearts. This heart you just start wrapping the wool around the card.

The more you wrap around the easier it is to get to the harder bits like the bottom tip of the heart.

Once I was happy with the amount of wool on it, I took the end of the wool and using a needle I threaded it through and tied a knot.

Pom Pom’s

I have made pom poms in several different projects and they are one of my favourite things to make. Here is the link to how to make Pom Poms

Once I have the 3 parts ready, time to make the garland. I took some twine and attached them hearts and poms to it in random shape and colour order.

Why don’t you give it a go ???

Hand Made Gifts

Teacup Candles

Now that Christmas is over, I can show you some of the hand made gifts that I made my friends and family

What you will need

  • Teacups
  • Soy Wax
  • Candle wicks
  • Double Sided Tape
  • Clothes Pegs
  • Essential Oils
  • Bain marie with melting pot

Method

I wanted to give candle making a try for a while now. I has the Teacups left over from the wedding centrepieces and I thought it would be nice to give them to people as gifts filled with a nice scented candle

Firstly, I cleaned the teacups and made sure they were no stains or spots on them. I then checked to see if I had the matching saucer to go with the cups I wanted to use. This turned out very important as the very first cup I did, when I went to get the saucer it was broke in half. It was my test cup, so it was ok I just glued it together.

I did some research online on what the best wax was to use, Soy Wax was the most popular. I bought a 2 KG bag and some candle wicks on Amazon

I used double sided tape to stick the wick to the bottom of the cup. This only worked ok, as when I went to pull the wick slightly to straighten it, it would come off the bottom. A big problem when I had the wax in already. Luckily that only happened once. To keep the wick up as straight as possible I used 2 clothes pegs. Like in the picture.

Once I had the cup ready it was time to melt the wax. I filled the melting pot I hat nearly full of wax and put it over the Bain marie filled with boiling water. Every so often I would take the melting pot and swirl the wax to help melt the wax.

When It was fully melted, I added some lavender essential oil. I wasn’t sure how many to add so I added approx. 25 drops. If you like an extra smelly candle I think you should add more.

Time to pour it into the cup. Slowly I poured the wax one side of the wick. It was hard not to get a drip on the side, but practice made it easier.

I slowly move the cup to a table that wouldn’t be moved while cooling. I found if I left it on the table I was working on it would cool at different rates and a crack would form at the top. This wasn’t really a big deal when burning but if you are giving them as gifts it didn’t look great.

I left the candle to set for at least 24 hrs. then trimmed the wick.

I bundled each teacup with some toiletries and wrapped them up in cellophane. They went down a treat I do say. What do you think?

Personalised Keyrings

I’m bring two crafts together that I have been doing recently. These keyrings have a clay part and a tassel.

Here is what you need

  • Key chain
  • Embroidery thread
  • gold thread
  • scissors
  • Air dry clay
  • Mini cookie cutter
  • pin
  • Acrylic Paint and brush

Method

Roll out some air dry clay. Taking some a mini cookie cooker and press it down into the clay and remove the shape

Using slightly damp fingers I smooth out the areas where the cutter had left a sharp line.

I then took a strait pin and started to make a whole at the top of the heart shape.

the taking the opposite side of the pin I made the whole bigger, again smoothing out the edge around the whole.

I did all this with 3 different shapes

When they where full dry I actually really liked the finish colour. So instead of painting the whole thing I painted half leaving some of the clay exposed.

Now I’m going to make the second crafty element of this keyring, a tassel.

I used embroidery thread to make the tassel as I didn’t want it to be bulky. you can click on this link to see how I make my Tassels

The tassels where easily attached to the key chain by tying them.

The clay charms where a little harder. I used a pliers to open one of the key chain loops. Open it enough to fit the clay charm in and the loop of the key chain

It was hard to close the look again without damaging the clay charm and I did have one casualty.

But when All was but together it looked great. What do you think?

Christmas Craft

Hanging Christmas Tree

The kitchen was the only room in the house that hadn’t been hit with the Christmas wand and I wanted to fix that.

I decided that the blank wall space above the kitchen table would be the perfect spot for this craft idea.

I got a helping hand from my Dad again and asked him to pick up some nice sticks from the hedges on his travels and he didn’t disappoint.

I lined them up starting with the longest and heaviest at the bottom up to the smallest.

I then divided the remainder of the baubles I had depending on the length of the stick. I threaded them onto the sticks.

Once the baubles where all on I took some craft twine to join the sticks together. When I did it first I had about 30cm between each stick but that was too big a gap so I reduced that to 20cm. I tied a separate piece of string between each stick making it easier to fix one side at a time.

The Tree was ready to hang. To be honest it looked a little bare so I decided to add a few more things to make it look better.

Firstly I added one of the flower bunches from the church pews at our wedding. I put it at the top to look like a star.

Then I added some small rope light to brighten it up. Looking much better now.

And there you have it. even if you don’t have floor space there is always room for a Christmas Tree somewhere

Christmas Craft

Upcycled Christmas Tree

I’m not sure if I have said it before but I am a farmers daughter. I have been exposed to a lot of materials that other people might not ever get their hands on. This upcycle project is one of these.

My dad has been getting our grass cut into round bales the last few years. The rap for the bales comes on these heavy rolls. Dad had a good few of these lying about so I came up with an idea.

I had seen these lovely Christmas trees made from pipe on Pinterest so I took that idea and twisted it a bit. Firstly I got my dad to cut the rolls into 4 even sections. Dad has a big shead full of all sorts if mad tools and work benches so he was happy to help.

I needed 28 pieces to make the pyramid I had in mind. Originally I had planed to spray paint these green but with the weather being so wet and cold getting out to a well ventilated area wasn’t really an option. So I went old school and got some good old poster paint from the craft store.

This as you can see was easy to apply but the coverage wasn’t great so I had to do 2 coats of paint. I wasn’t that strict on the inside of the rolls just made sure the roll was covered in green.

I had decided that this Tree was going to be displayed in a window to the front of the house. When I placed the rolls on the sill I could only see half the first run of circles so I needed a shelf to put them on.

Dad to the rescue again. He supplied me with this pallet end that would work perfectly. I simply covered it in wallpaper. Backwards with the white side out and then put some snow blanket over it so it looked like the ground.

Now I could start stacking the rolls into the pyramid. But this came with a new problem. I didn’t take into consideration how heavy these rolls where and as I stacked them the pyramid would collapse. the first solution to the problem I came up with was to glue the bottom 3 on each end so they would work as anchors. This actually worked pretty well but as the pyramid got higher even the anchors started to slip.

My Dad advised that maybe if I glued another 3 in the middle of the bottom row, that might do the trick, but the same thing happened.

Next I decided that putting ledges on each side of the bottom roll would stop them from creeping out. I took some Lolly pop sticks. Snapped them in half and glued 4 halves together. I then glued this to the base under the blanket of snow so it couldn’t be seen. I tried stacking the rolls again and BINGO it worked.

Now I could start arranging it in the window. Once I had the base and rolls up I picked a selection of decorations to fill in the rolls.

I was so happy with how it turned out and it looked great in the sun in out front window. What do you think?

Toilet Paper Roll Snowflakes

This is a project I have had my eye on for a while and I had collected quite a few toilet roll over the weeks to make sure I had enough

I took the centre of the toilet roll and flattened it. Then taking some sharp scissors I cut the roll in 1cm strips. As I went along I could see that I had too different sizes so I separated them into too piles.

Using 5 of the larger roll cut strips I arranged them like petals and glued then with a flue gun to make a flower.

Using the smaller roll I too it and folded it in half making 2 small petals. I then placed a glob of hot glue in the centre of one of the petals and put the small petals in the centre.

I repeated this on on 5 large petals. I also used this technique on other designs.

Here are the designs, 2 small and 2 large.

To finish these off I got some budges silver spray paint to make them sparkle. Now I am all up for budget crafts but I wont be buying it again. No only did feck all silver colour come out of the can, it didn’t stay on the snow flake. As I started hanging them on the window my fingers where covered in silver. Listen learned, always buy good spray pain.

Three Christmas Trees

Paper Christmas Tree

As I was wandering around one of my favorite shops https://sostrenegrene.com/ when I came across these Styrofoam cones and ball and started to wonder what I could do with them. I took the Medium and Large cones home with me.

Believe it or not I still have some materials left from our wedding (I’ve been using up scraps here and there). I have some strips of paper I used for the paper flowers. So I decided to use up some of those

Taking one of the strips I used the dull side of the scissors to curl the paper. I then cut the strip in half till I had nice little pile gathered.

I covered the cone with some white crepe paper using PVA glue. Once it was dry I started adding the curly strips around the base. Using a brush I put PVA blue on the cone and then held the paper curl in place.

I repeated this with the curls all the way up to the top of the cone. I decided to just leave the top as is with no extra embellishment.

Wool Christmas Tree

For this tree I covered the cone with green crepe paper. this way if there where any gaps in the wool it would be green that could be seen.

I took the wool I wanted to use and started to make spirals on my finger.

Making the spirals different sizes I started gluing them to the base. I used hot glue, this can be tricky if you put too much on it can melt the Styrofoam so be careful.

Velvet Ribbon Christmas Tree

This was the trickiest one to make I have to say. You know when the idea in your head doesn’t match how it turns out. That’s what happened with this tree.

Again the cone was covered in green crepe before I started decorating. I then took some dark green velvet ribbon and made little tips, hot gluing them to keep in place. after I had a little pile done, I started gluing them around the base.

I tried to put the second row in between the gaps left by the first row to make it look fuller. I had to start using a small width ribbon to fill in some gaps.

Another problem that arose with this craft was the fact that the velvet was like Velcro, it picked up every bit of dirt going. especially the glue gun residue.

Eventually I got it finished and once I took a lint roller to it, it actually turned out ok.

Here are the finished products, let me know if you have a try?

Clay Leaf Bowl

I saw this DIY on a page called daintydressdiaries.com, So I decided to give it a go myself. Here is how I did it.

What you will need

  • Air Dry Clay
  • Large Leaves
  • Rolling Pin
  • Paint and Paintbrush
  • Bowl & Cling Film

Method

I took some nice size sycamore leafs from the ground outside my house. Try and judge these by the size of the bowl you are using

I used some craft air drying clay in the local value shop for €1.50 a packet. I used 2 packets for this project.

I took the clay and heated it in my hands to make it easier to roll out with the rolling pin. As I rolled I tried to keep an even thickness.

I then placed the leaf on the clay checking it was big enough. Its good to make sure the leaf is not too dried out so it doesn’t get stuck in the clay.

Once is was basically pressed into the clay I took the rolling pin and lightly pressed it in to make sure it was all covered.

Now taking a craft knife, I cut away the excess from the edge and discarded it (well I mean I put it back in an air tight bag to use again)

Once I have all cut away I can lift the leaf. Now you can see the imprint of all the veins.

Take a clean bowl and cover this with cling film. Carefully lift the clay leaf up and tuck it into the bowl. Now wait for the bowl to dry. It says on the packet it takes 24hrs but I left it longer. The colour of the bowl will go lighter.

To do this post I have a “here’s one I made earlier” for the second part!

Once the leaf bowl id full dry it is time to paint. I used some lovely rose gold paint I found in Tiger.

Using a normal brush I painted the bowl. I didn’t use water in case it softened the bowl again.

And there you have it, A lovely bowl perfect for trinkets or candles

Happy Halloween

For years I worked in a joke shop back home. I would love to decorate the window and Halloween was my favourite. So when it came to Halloween at home I often took it to the next level

When I first lived in Dublin I only had my bedroom window to decorate. I lived on the ground floor so I took full advantage.

I took my inspiration from the famous floating candles in Harry Potter. After collecting toilet roll and kitchen roll inserts for weeks I side my glue gun to created a fake drip wax affect on them. Once they where all dried I painted them white. I took some transparent tread I use for jewellery I made a cross about 2cm from the top that a battery tealight could rest on. I then hung them at different lengths at the window. I then went a bit crazy with the webs. So much fun.

Here is how the first Floating Candle display turned out.
